Expanding or relocating?
If you’ve ever been to the South Dakota State Fair, you’re familiar with the growing community of Huron. The community is a hub for growth, community spirit, and innovation. It’s a community with a strategic vision for the future.
Huron’s success can be attributed to its strong sense of community. Laurie Shelton of the Huron Chamber and Visitors Bureau emphasizes this collaborative spirit, stating, “We all work together because it’s all about Huron.” This community focus is evident in Huron’s investment in downtown revitalization and support for career training programs, aimed at building a skilled workforce. As a result, new attractions like local wineries are emerging, making Huron an increasingly appealing place to live and visit. Ashley Curnow, a Huron resident who returned to the community after college, said, “you feel safe, you feel surrounded, you feel supported.”
Advanced Sunflower is an example of growth in Huron. The company has been a key player in the sunflower industry since 2011, working directly with local farmers and processing sunflowers from approximately 75,000 acres annually. Advanced Sunflower is expanding, which will bring 20 more jobs to the community.
Dr. Will Carr, a chiropractor in Huron, captures the excitement around the city’s growth, saying, “We’re seeing a lot of change in Huron. It’s really exciting to be a part of.”
But growth doesn’t stop with industry. The Greater Huron Development Corporation (GHDC) recognizes the need for more housing, so they’re taking action. They have created affordable lots in the Southtown Residential Development site, and even more housing projects are on the horizon.
The GHDC is instrumental in shaping Huron’s economic landscape. They own a 125-acre industrial park certified by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED), along with two other industrial parks to accommodate various business sizes. These efforts are supported by strong public-private partnerships. Ted Haeder, CEO of the GHDC, explains that “Businesswise, South Dakota is just a great climate. Huron, with all the infrastructure we have and a local government that’s willing to work with new businesses makes Huron a great place to do business.”
With a clear focus on the future and a strong sense of belonging, Huron is building something special. They are a testament to what can happen when a community comes together to create a welcoming place for everyone.
