Embracing Opportunity and Charm in Summit

Summit, SD is a small town with a big heart nestled conveniently along the I-29 corridor. More than just a pit stop on your way to bigger cities, Summit is a thriving community committed to economic development. With its friendly faces and central location – just two hours from Sioux Falls and Fargo, and a quick half hour to Milbank or Watertown – it’s an ideal spot for families seeking a welcoming place to call home.

Local business owners and community leaders are committed to creating an environment that supports growth. Tom Heinz, president and co-owner of TA Express Coffee Cup Travel Plaza, has made significant investments in the town, transforming what started as a basic fuel stop into a thriving business that serves both locals and travelers. “We’ve kept evolving and filling the needs of the customer,” he shares, emphasizing the importance of reinvesting in the community. His initiative to provide rent-to-own homes for employees showcases his dedication to improving the quality of life in Summit.

Mayor Travis Benthin echoes this sentiment, highlighting the town’s supportive atmosphere. “If we bring businesses to town, it brings more opportunity,” he explains. Recent improvements, such as road paving and plans for improved water quality, and the addition of a wellness center, are laying the groundwork for future growth. With major highways and a railroad running through Summit, the possibilities for economic expansion are endless.

The welcoming atmosphere in Summit is booming with energy. Larry Hayworth, owner of County Line campground, moved to Summit from Missouri eight years ago, drawn by the genuine kindness of the people. “There’s so much opportunity here,” he states, pointing to the campground’s growth and potential for new businesses to thrive alongside it. The influx of seasonal visitors attracted by the area’s natural beauty and central location enhances the town’s appeal for future business development. “It’s just unbelievable how nice people are here,” he adds, reinforcing the sense of community that makes Summit a great place to live and grow.

Tim Gapp, Market President of Minnwest Bank in Summit, highlights the important work being done by the Summit Area Economic Growth Incorporated to support local development. The town has seen a surprising number of younger families moving in, making it a great spot for those looking for a place to settle down while still having easy access to nearby jobs. “We have a state-certified city-owned daycare and a K-12 school,” he points out, emphasizing the amenities that make Summit attractive for growing families.

As Summit grows, its central location, supportive community, and commitment to economic development make it a standout choice for those looking to invest in the area. With a mix of rural charm and modern conveniences, Summit offers families a place to thrive and businesses a chance to succeed.
