Roughly halfway between Mitchell and Sioux Falls, this town of over 1,300 is just off the interstate and has the best of both worlds between opportunity and small-town charm.
Mayor Glenda Blindert has built a legacy for herself and her family in Salem, having started a business that will continue to grow for generations to come. “I’ve been a business owner here for over 30 years. Been fortunate enough to bring my two children into the business to keep it going, our business has grown,” said Blindert, “Salem just has a great economic environment.”
With a strong farming community, land for a new housing development, and new community center with city offices and an event center on the way, economic development in this town isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
Other local business owners are seeing the positive impact of economic development in their community, too. Michelle Feterl is grateful for their committee that helps enhance the town of Salem. “We have to have growth in order to keep our town,” said Feterl, “A lot of small towns are fading, so I’m very fortunate that we have a great, great backbone of a community to be thinking of our future in Salem, because we do have a very bright future.”
The great schools and exciting athletic programs also add to Salem’s charm and appeal. McCook School District Superintendent Matt Alley recognizes the importance of encouraging one another in a town like Salem. “Our community offers that small town feel with a small school and a good supportive community,” said Alley.
As one of Sioux Metro Growth Alliance’s communities, Mayor Blindert can rest assured that this community will continue to thrive. “Salem has just been a good town to be in.”
