SIOUX FALLS S.D. – Furniture Mart USA announced today that it will be nearly doubling its campus by adding 300,000 square feet to the distribution center and corporate headquarters in northern Sioux Falls. When completed, the facility will be over 650,000 square feet and will be among the largest buildings in South Dakota. Construction crews began excavation on the site in October 2020. A formal groundbreaking is planned for this summer.
Inside its corporate headquarters, Furniture Mart USA recently installed an additional 55 workstations which more than doubled the size of its customer service operation. More employees will be hired later this year and next year as the expanded distribution center is brought online.
“South Dakota’s strong economy is creating opportunity for businesses like Furniture Mart USA to continue growing and thriving,” said Governor Kristi Noem. “Our ‘Open for Business’ approach is allowing Furniture Mart USA to create even more jobs for our state.”
The company was founded in 1977 when Bill Hinks opened his first Unclaimed Freight Furniture on West 12th Street in Sioux Falls. Today, Furniture Mart USA operates 59 stores and five distribution centers in six midwestern states. The family-owned and operated business – known by its Furniture Mart, Ashley HomeStore, Unclaimed Freight, and Carpet One brands – is now the 35th largest furniture retailer in the nation.
“When it comes down to our decision to expand in South Dakota versus other possible locations, what’s been made abundantly clear is that South Dakota’s commitment to being open for business and staying open for business throughout and despite the pandemic is a clear indication of what it means to do business here,” said Troy Eichmann, COO of Furniture Mart USA. “We look forward to providing opportunity to South Dakotans, while simultaneously providing quality home furnishings to our customers. Home is a place for family and tradition, and we are proud to be a part of that.”
Eichmann adds the 300,000 square feet addition will provide distribution support for the Midwest region as Sioux Falls is a central hub. This growth will enable the company to have more products in stock and will service customers more quickly, which is something they have come to expect.
