Governor’s Office of Economic Development awarded Silver Shovel award

July 6, 2023

SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Governor’s Office of Economic Development was honored for the first time with a Silver Shovel award by Area Development magazine in the “fewer than 2 million population” category.

The magazine’s annual shovel award recognizes state economic development agencies that drive significant job creation through innovative policies, infrastructure improvements, processes, and promotions that attract new employers and investments in new and expanded facilities.

“South Dakota’s continued economic development growth is evident. We are proud that time and again, people are choosing to not only call South Dakota home, but to open and expand their businesses in this great state,” said Chris Schilken, Governor’s Office of Economic Development Commissioner.

These annual awards are presented to states that have achieved significant success in terms of job creation and economic impact. All 50 states are invited to participate.

According to Area Development magazine, the expansions of Manitou Group, Valley Queen Cheese, and Royal Canin are vital to local economies and the addition of nearly 700 jobs from these three expansions will have significant impact.

“We are honored to be recognized by Area Development for this award and look forward to South Dakota’s continued growth,” Schilken said.
