The Research and Commercialization program is designed to increase research and development activities in South Dakota while maximizing the economic impact of the activities through commercialization of research results and development of research-based industry clusters.
In 2005, the program began providing seed funding to support development of focused applied research and development centers involving South Dakota universities, businesses and private sector research organizations. The research centers are supported for up to five years while they develop their external research funding. After five years, the centers should be self-sustaining and no longer receive state research center funding.
Ten research centers no longer receive state support but continue to operate. In 2015, there were three research centers that received almost $3.67 million in state support through the program and generated $7 million in external funding from federal agencies and private sector partners.
